Kelvedon Singers

The KELVEDON SINGERS, formed 50 years ago, now rehearse in Coggeshall, returning as recently as Easter 2014 to Kelvedon to perform Haydn's rousing Creation and Nelson Mass.  Many of the present choir have been singing together for over 20 years; they also actively encourage new members to come and share their sheer enjoyment of singing.

Members come from a wide area of South Suffolk and North Essex and present concerts or sing services in in the numerous beautiful village churches in the region. The choir frequently travels further afield and has sung in Ely and Liverpool Cathedrals, Wimborne Minster and St. Luke's Church in Chelsea. It regularly tours in the Lot Region of France, including singing in Cahors Cathedral. In 2014 the choir sang in an extended 'Last Post' service at the Menin Gate in Ypres, where 55,000 soldiers killed in WWI are commemorated.

Christopher Phelps - Musical Director

The choir's director CHRISTOPHER PHELPS trained as a chorister and pianist at Gloucester Cathedral during the era of the famous organist-composer Herbert Sumsion; in addition he was an organ student under John Sanders. Chris studied at the Royal College of Music, going on to win international prizes for his conducting and working in Armagh, Vienna, Salzburg and Italy. After many years as Course Tutor and Head of Conducting at Colchester Institute, Chris now works freelance as a conductor and orchestrator/arranger. He has recorded his own transcriptions of a César Franck organ work for ASV records, conducting the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra.

DAVID MITCHELL, having taken a break of two years, will be returning to accompany Kelvedon Singers as accompanist in September 2018. He graduated from Durham University with a BA in Music and an MA in Performance. He has accompanied dance classes at the Performers' College, and teaches piano.
